Johan born and raised in Grenoble, France. After his PhD, that he did at the “Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble” (IPAG), He moved to the “Max Planck Institut für Astronomie” (MPIA) in Heidelberg, Germany. After 5 years, he moved to Valparaiso in Chile, and now he is the Max Planck Tandem group leader, a partnership between the University of Valparaiso and the MPIA.

His research topics are oriented towards planetary formation and circumstellar disk evolution. Johan has been using a variety of observational techniques (mid-infrared spectroscopy, near-infrared and sub-millimeter interferometry, near-infrared direct imaging), but his main focus at the moment is high angular resolution observations using VLT/SPHERE and NACO as well as ALMA. He is particularly interested in debris disks, which are the remnants of the gas-rich primordial disks, and are good analogs to the Kuiper and asteroid belts in the solar system.
